The Jura is a French-speaking canton in the north-west of Switzerland, which split off from the canton of Basel-Landschaft late in 1979 following a referendum. At just under 840 km², the Jura is barely larger than the metropolitan area of New York City. In contrast to the metropolis of millions located on the Hudson River, the canton of Jura is very sparsely populated. A total of around 70,000 people live in this very rural canton. Thanks to its fantastic natural landscapes, Jura has developed into an insider tip that is largely spared from mass tourism.
