Die heutige Firma Callaway wurde 1982 vom damals 63-jährigen Ely Callaway gegründet. Callaway kaufte damals die Hälfte der Firma Hickory Stick Ltd.. Das Unternehmen produzierte in den 80ern in einer Nische Golfschläger. Nach kurzer Zeit übernahm Callaway die Firma komplett und benannte sie in Callaway Hickory Stick USA um. 1992 ging Callaway an die Börse und bereits 1996 galt Callaway als weltweit größter Hersteller von Golfausrüstung.
