Round of golf at The Alto Club: Playing pleasure and top-level training
Golfing enjoyment in Sotogrande
The Alto Club Course, formerly known as Almenara, is nestled in the picturesque hills of Sotogrande and is considered one of the most beautiful golf courses in Andalusia. The 18 holes, designed by Dave Thomas and refined by Manuel Piñero, offer a varied and strategically challenging experience for both beginners and advanced golfers. The fairways wind their way through pine and cork oak forests, past lakes and gentle elevations – a visual delight for every golf lover, with views of the Mediterranean from several spots on the course.
The course: variety and challenge
The course consists of two 9-hole loops, “Los Pinos” and “Los Lagos”, which are combined to form an 18-hole round. The holes are varied in design, with fast, undulating greens and strategically placed bunkers. The diversity of the landscape is particularly noteworthy: while some holes offer wide views of the surrounding countryside, others demand precision and solid course management. The fairways are generally very well maintained, the bunkers contain plenty of sand, and the greens present different levels of difficulty depending on the season.
Unfortunately, due to rainy weather, we had to cope with rather wet conditions – and we were not alone: at the same time, the finals of the Global Junior Golf Tour were taking place on the course, with some impressive scores from players under 23. There is no printed yardage book, but the carts are equipped with GPS, which makes navigation on the course much easier. During our winter round we were only allowed to drive on the cart paths, but this did not spoil the fun of the game.
Playing experience: suitable for every handicap
The Alto Club Course is known for its relaxed holiday atmosphere and is ideal for golfers of all abilities. The course is used mainly by members but is also open to visitors. Green fees are particularly attractive in the low season, and carts are recommended, as the terrain is quite hilly.
